Being a professional plumber in Burnaby means more than just working on pipes—it means being part of the fabric of this city. Our team at GSP has always believed that the best way to serve Burnaby isn’t just through our tools and skills, but through time and heart. From the neighborhoods near Metrotown to the tight-knit community around Burnaby Heights, we’ve been fortunate to lend a hand in more ways than one.

This post highlights some of our favorite volunteering moments from the past few years—experiences that brought us closer together as a team and helped us deepen our ties to the city we call home.

Our Team’s Favorite Volunteering Moments in Burnaby

We asked around the shop and collected stories from the team about their most memorable volunteering experiences. These stories aren’t about bragging—they’re about what we’ve learned, who we’ve helped, and how giving back made us stronger together.

1. Plumbing Repairs at a Burnaby Shelter

Last winter, one of our most fulfilling projects involved volunteering at a local shelter near Edmonds. The facility had ongoing plumbing issues—leaky fixtures, inconsistent hot water, and a few clogged drains. We decided to donate a full day of labour and all necessary parts to get things back in working order.

Not only were we able to restore proper function to their kitchen and bathrooms, but we also left knowing that dozens of people would have a more comfortable experience because of our work. For many of us, it was a reminder of how a basic service like plumbing can directly improve quality of life.

2. Supporting the Burnaby Food Bank Holiday Drive

Every year, the Greater Vancouver Food Bank does incredible work across the region—including here in Burnaby. Around the holidays, our team organized a food drive, encouraging customers and neighbors to drop off non-perishable goods at our shop near Lougheed.

Within three weeks, we filled five large bins with donations and personally delivered them to the Burnaby depot. Our staff also volunteered a few hours helping sort food and prepare boxes for local families.

Most requested donation items included:

  • Canned proteins (tuna, chicken)
  • Whole grain pasta
  • Baby formula
  • Peanut butter
  • Rice and lentils

This event has become a yearly tradition we’re proud of, and it’s a small way we can support the broader Burnaby community beyond the services we offer.

3. Habitat for Humanity Build Day in South Burnaby

A few years ago, we teamed up with other local tradespeople to support a Habitat for Humanity build on the southern edge of Burnaby. The goal was to help construct affordable housing units for working families.

We showed up early in the morning with our gear and spent the day roughing in plumbing for kitchens and bathrooms. Many of us are used to working solo or in pairs on jobsites, but this time we were part of a massive collaborative effort.

It was incredible seeing so many skilled trades working in sync—and knowing that our work would help create safe, affordable homes for years to come.

4. Burnaby Lake Cleanup and Community Day

While not directly related to our plumbing trade, our team joined a local environmental group one spring for a cleanup day at Burnaby Lake. We helped remove debris along the trails, cleaned storm drains, and even repaired a few damaged outdoor faucets in the public washrooms.

It was a great opportunity to meet other residents and contribute to the preservation of one of our city’s most beautiful natural spaces.

What Volunteering Has Taught Us

Each of these experiences brought something unique, but they all reinforced the same core ideas:

  • We’re part of something bigger. Burnaby is more than a service area—it’s our home.
  • Giving back builds team spirit. Our team gets stronger when we work together on something meaningful.
  • Small acts create real impact. Whether it’s fixing a faucet or sorting food, every bit helps.

Volunteering also reminds us of why we started in this business in the first place—to help people solve problems and feel more secure in their homes.

Wrapping Up: Why We’ll Keep Giving Back
